The Ephrata Cloister Rug

The most famous book ever printed in America became the inspiration for a 17-foot runner. Hooked on Belgian linen, each letter completed became a blessed event for me. The sisters of the Ephrata Cloister in Ephrata, Pennsylvania created this written work that so spoke to me. The sisters of the writing school created fabulous art in calligraphy. They used quill pens to make it, and then the brothers of the Cloister printed their work. The runner it all inspired is tapestry-hooked (very fine loops) in a harvest of hand-dyed color. The design in each block, while inspired by the beauty of the sisters’ work, was recreated only in terms of the style of their work. The two mediums of quill and hook are vastly different. The wool flannel I used was cut to 3/32nds of an inch in width. The quill created arabesques and designs as fine and delicate as a human hair.
